The inspiration to support and invest in education surrounds us. Young people overcome adversity each day to better themselves on campuses of higher learning. Mothers and fathers take the time to, even after starting a family, set an example for their children and go back to school, at night, while also working full time jobs.
Why? Perhaps, as Maya Angelou said, it’s because we all believe that “when you know better, you do better,” and as Nelson Mandela said, education is “the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”
We all want to change the world, and recently, we were honored to watch as 400 people gathered at the Inn at Warner Hall to try and do just that.
Rappahannock Community College – the only institution of higher education in the 12 counties that surround the Inn at Warner Hall on Virginia’s Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck – hosted its ninth annual Preakness Party here in late May.
Even amid what turned into an extremely rainy day, guests came out to enjoy delicious samplings from area restaurants, and wineries, bet on horses, try their luck in a robust silent and live auction and raise money for the Rappahannock Community College Educational Foundation. Total proceeds from the event this year netted over $65,000. Now that’s a well-run race!
The Foundation awards scholarships and provides funds for creative projects and programs not supported by state monies.
Enlisting support for scholarships and creative programing is important now more than ever because access to Virginia state tuition assistance is at an all-time low.
The mission of Rappahannock Community College is to provide access to high quality educational experiences for members of this community. We know that first hand. Several Warner Hall team members are students there.
We can vouch that Rappahannock Community College is preparing students of all ages and backgrounds for success as learners, employees, future business owners and perhaps their most important role, productive and caring citizens of the 21st century.
Thank you, Team Rappahannock, and your army of volunteers, donors and students for putting on such a fantastic event.
